James A. Bailey House (Fan-spotted)
10 St. Nicholas Place (W 150th St & St. Nicholas Ave), Hamilton Heights
The Circus King's Castle
The James A. Bailey House at 10 St. Nicholas Place is one of Manhattan's few surviving Gilded Age mansions — a gray limestone castle of turrets, gables, and arches built 1886–1888 in the Romanesque Revival style for James Anthony Bailey, co-founder of the Barnum & Bailey Circus. Bailey was the temperamental opposite of his famous partner: where P. T. Barnum was the roaring public showman, Bailey was the quiet logistical genius who actually ran "The Greatest Show on Earth," managing its trains, tents, and thousands of employees with legendary precision. His house, designed by architect Samuel B. Reed, made the fortune visible: its interiors glowed with elaborate woodwork and, most famously, windows of jewel-like mosaic stained glass produced by the innovative Henry F. Belcher process — among the finest surviving displays of it anywhere.
Why Build a Mansion in Harlem?
Bailey's choice of address tells its own Gilded Age story. In the 1880s, St. Nicholas Place sat at the city's advancing edge — an airy ridge above Harlem where developers were laying out villa plots for the prosperous, betting that fashion would follow the new elevated lines north. Rather than fight for a foothold on Fifth Avenue, a self-made showman could build a freestanding castle with light on all four sides and views over the Harlem plain. Fashion ultimately swerved elsewhere, which is partly why the house survived: the neighborhood that grew around it — today's Sugar Hill — never demolished its early mansions at the pace of midtown. After decades as a funeral home, the Bailey House was restored as a private residence; it has been a New York City Landmark since 1974.
The Season 4 Sighting
In March 2026, a fan reported Season 4 filming activity at the mansion, making it one of this map's fan-spotted locations. The sighting is unconfirmed by HBO, but it is highly plausible: the production filmed extensively in Harlem and Sugar Hill for Season 4 (see the nearby Sugar Hill pin), and intact 1880s mansion exteriors simply do not exist in midtown Manhattan anymore — if the show needed a real Gilded Age mansion facade on location, this block is where one still stands. As with all fan-spotted pins, treat the identification as a well-founded lead rather than an official credit.
Fan-spotted by Reddit user u/moose-paint and reported on March 24, 2026. No official HBO confirmation. The Bailey Mansion (1888) is a genuine Gilded Age landmark and a plausible filming exterior, but its use in the show has not been verified by production sources.
